- 46% of workers surveyed were primarily concerned about increased safety risks on construction sites
- 31% expressed concerns regarding job security
- 26% worried about the potential “loss of sociability” in the workplace
- 17% expressed concern about determining responsibility when automated systems fail or accidents occur
As automation becomes more integrated into construction projects, questions continue to arise regarding accountability, oversight, and worker protection.
Some Construction Workers Believe AI Could Improve Safety and Productivity
Supporters of AI and autonomous construction equipment argue that these technologies may improve productivity, efficiency, and potentially workplace safety.
The survey reportedly revealed differences in opinion among age groups. Workers between the ages of 25 and 44 were reportedly more likely to believe that autonomous machinery could improve:
- Productivity
- Construction speed
- Safety
- Work quality
- Fuel efficiency
Workers over the age of 44 were reportedly less likely to share the same level of optimism regarding automation and AI technologies.
According to the report, approximately 58% of workers surveyed did not believe that AI would necessarily result in better construction performance overall.
Volvo CE, however, stated that automation technologies may contribute to safer work environments.
Volvo Group Automation Specialist Christian Grante reportedly stated:
“Our research into this area has shown that autonomous systems really can improve safety and productivity for our customers. And with more machines working in collaboration with humans, rather than being controlled by them, this will only increase further.”
