L&B Spumoni Gardens

L&B Spumoni Gardens, a beloved Brooklyn joint, has deep roots that trace back to 1917 when Ludovico Barbati immigrated from Torella Di Lombardi, Italy. In 1918, Ludovico learned the art of pizza-making from a local baker and began selling his creations using a horse and wagon, aptly named Babe. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to peddle his goods throughout Gravesend and Bensonhurst. By 1938, Ludovico recognized the growing demand for his products and purchased a vacant property on 86th Street, where he established a factory to produce Spumoni and ices. As his business flourished, he invited friends from the old country to help build the first of three buildings. This expansion allowed him to serve the community more effectively, and soon, local residents flocked to buy his delicious offerings. The iconic Pizzeria was constructed next, famous for its thick Sicilian pies and round pizzas. Over the years, a luncheonette was added, which eventually expanded to include the current Dining Room.

Today, L&B Spumoni Gardens proudly remains in its fourth generation, with family members always on hand to welcome guests. L&B Spumoni Gardens is committed to Ludovico’s legacy, ensuring that everything served is made fresh on-site, with no frozen or prepackaged ingredients. With a motto of “Fresh,” they continue to delight Brooklynites with some of the best Sicilian slices in NYC since 1939.

CZEN Restaurant

MangoSeed, a Caribbean restaurant, officially reopened in February 2023 after community demand brought it back to life. Founded in 2008 by brothers Jermaine, Paul, and Johann Burrowes, MangoSeed quickly became a local institution known for its unique dishes like oxtail pizza and jerk fish tacos. The restaurant originally stood out in a neighborhood filled with takeout options, offering a sit-down dining experience. After closing in July 2022 due to the pandemic, the Burrowes brothers shifted their focus to their bike shop, Burrowes Brothers Bikes, located next door. Despite their success in the cycling industry, loyal customers missed the restaurant and continuously urged the brothers to revive it.

Responding to the overwhelming support, the Burrowes family transformed the space into a vibrant two-room venue featuring plush booths and a granite bar. The new MangoSeed retains many classic favorites while elevating the dining atmosphere. With a cozy ambiance and a menu that continues to highlight Caribbean flavors, MangoSeed has welcomed back old regulars and new customers alike. The Burrowes brothers are thrilled to see the community’s excitement, making it a perfect spot for enjoying great food and drinks while waiting for bike repairs or simply gathering with friends.
